In reading Kim Stanley Robinson’s Ministry for the Future, I learned about several different global health indices such as the Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index and the Happy Planet Index, which factor in several facets of human life to assess its quality. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has long been referenced as the primary indicator for a country’s wellbeing and development, and I was interested in how each of these factors related to one another. My main question started as:
How does GDP misrepresent the wellbeing of a population?
In researching this topic, it became clear that even these datasets that attempted to answer my question were not exempt from built-in inequity. The four metrics I was able to find for the largest number of individual countries were: GDP, IHDI, CO2 emissions, and HPIBy visualizing this data, I wanted to represent the HPI scores of each country with their contributions to the global GDP. When I was compiling the data, I noticed that the GDP of an individual country seemed to increase proportionally with its CO2 emissions. Ideologically, I thought it was appropriate to link the HPI with the IDHI. The result is an abstract representation of the selected country as a relationship between its output and the wholistic indices that assess country happiness.
Going ForwardMoving forward, I’d like to add to this project in the following ways:
Add new functionality
Create an input or selection menu to update the visualizationFine tune the relationships between the indicesIterate on representation of the data to reveal more potential relationshipsIncrease data scopeUpdate the dataset to cover more timeDig in to the factors that help create the HPI or IHDIFind a better way to normalize some of the data

The phrase “from the river to the sea” has complex origins, but was adopted as a protest slogan in the 1960s to advocate for Palestinian liberation from Israeli occupation following the 1964 charter of the PLO’s Palestinian National Council which called for "the recovery of the usurped homeland in its entirety.” This sentiment has lasted since and is currently what fuels the slogan’s usage in contemporary protest language. In English, the phrase goes: “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” It refers to the geographical area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

The widespread suppression of the phrase in western media echoes a greater suppression of Palestinian liberation efforts as a whole. Through systematic erasure of Palestinian suffering and simultaneous weaponization of Jewish trauma, fear of an imagined genocide overshadows the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government, and the actions of armed resistance beget the collective punishment of those envisioning a future where Palestinians are free and equal. Meant to elicit western solidarity – the phrase rhymes in English, and has been popularized among English channels – “from the river to the sea” is an effort to dismantle zionist attitudes propagated there.

Refaat Alareer, Palestinian writer, poet, professor and activist wrote the words “If I must die, you must live” as the first two lines of his poem If I must die on November 1, 2023 during Israeli retaliation to Hamas’ October 7th attack. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike on December 6th, 2023 in the Gaza Strip.

As the sign stays lit, the red light transitions from red to blue, except for in the phrase “If I must die.” Slight shifts back and forth between the red and blue happen perpetually, the way water can wash away blood, but not entirely.

Timeline: 5 weeks Methods: Survey, Moderated Usability Test, Interview
Category: Research
Hugely popular in Europe, German edtech startup,&#38;nbsp;Knowunityrecently launched in the U.S. and needed insights for users’ study habits across middle school and high school.

 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
SurveyFor the survey, we wanted to generally assess the role technology plays in students’ homework completion flows. At the time of publishing this case study, we recieved 15 responses.Two questions we wanted to answer upfront were:
1. How do you normally find help with your homework?2. Which platforms or apps do you use for studying or completing &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; homework/assignments?

&#60;img width="2196" height="1116" width_o="2196" height_o="1116" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/44a2a4e876c89369f0fafea5e09d27e5482a8f9b9c6b5913261695b290c73aa9/knowunitySurveyQuestion3.png" data-mid="199208534" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/44a2a4e876c89369f0fafea5e09d27e5482a8f9b9c6b5913261695b290c73aa9/knowunitySurveyQuestion3.png" /&#62;

see the full survey results and questions here
Interview
From our survey respondents, we were able to recruit 8 participants for an interview and moderated usability test. To effectively understand how students were doing homework as well as to assess Knowunity’s function, we decided to break the sessions into two parts:
 A.) General semi-structured interview&#38;nbsp;
B.) Targeted usability testing of specific product features
see the full interview script and protocol here

For the first part, we asked questions related to the student’s current school situation and preferences for finding information. During the second phase, we used the information gathered upfront to test a feature of the Knowunity app as it related to the problems they mentioned.&#38;nbsp;
Analysis
&#60;img width="1206" height="496" width_o="1206" height_o="496" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ea8a208feda16b406b79ac5efa747af91051b1e7978dc90d0c3ef15fe715ec8f/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-1.05.54-PM.png" data-mid="199315688" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ea8a208feda16b406b79ac5efa747af91051b1e7978dc90d0c3ef15fe715ec8f/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-1.05.54-PM.png" /&#62;

From our interviews, we were able to identify 3 key user groups:
 Middle schoolHigh school&#38;nbsp;High schoolers in AP classes&#38;nbsp;
For each group, we were able to determine the types of assignments, how long they spent, and what the deadlines were.
These were critical points for us to paint an accurate picture for an international audience of U.S. student habits.
&#60;img width="1480" height="628" width_o="1480" height_o="628" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b42b2fbed24d4177c78d5a54bcd3282be3a63cd7bebbc12ad5e1507bf162b429/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-1.08.40-PM.png" data-mid="199315895" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b42b2fbed24d4177c78d5a54bcd3282be3a63cd7bebbc12ad5e1507bf162b429/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-1.08.40-PM.png" /&#62;
We were also able to clarify our hypotheses that we gathered from our initial survey:
&#38;nbsp;
8/8 of our users mentioned asking their friends for help&#38;nbsp;
6/8 users talked about their instructors providing materials they relied on
5/8 users said they used google and other specific websites&#60;img width="1536" height="716" width_o="1536" height_o="716" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e9c9da85f7c013240b8c9263375109ac31a11be515d426e39d3ea0fd10545532/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-1.10.49-PM.png" data-mid="199315957" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e9c9da85f7c013240b8c9263375109ac31a11be515d426e39d3ea0fd10545532/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-1.10.49-PM.png" /&#62;
In the effort of identifying inputs, we found that students’ queries fell into 2 main subjects: Math and Liberal Arts/Science.
For math, students tended to input the full question they were being asked in their homework assignments, whereas other subjects like english or social studies had students doing more exploratory research.
It is important to mention, that AP students knew that their coursework was standardized and were searching much more narrowly for the answers to their assignments.&#38;nbsp;
Suggestions
We came up with several suggestions, but I’d like to focus on our most impactful one here. You can find the rest of our suggestions in the slide deck linked at the bottom of this article.From our interviews, we were able to identify a specific gap between what the app offered and what students needed: educator materials. We came up with the idea that Knowunity should implement a feature that would allow teachers to upload their own content to the app and create classroom-specific groups to foster student engagement and discussion.

&#60;img width="1188" height="510" width_o="1188" height_o="510" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9100dee28c7615c78d903c25672604786a31857ecfbc7949282c1747253c8a6b/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-10.07.47-AM.png" data-mid="199298703" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9100dee28c7615c78d903c25672604786a31857ecfbc7949282c1747253c8a6b/Screen-Shot-2023-12-13-at-10.07.47-AM.png" /&#62;
selected quotes from interviews
Knowunity has a strong emphasis on being a platform for students, by students, and we wanted to maintain that ethos when formulating our reccommendations.
To ensure that our proposed feature was in line with Knowunity’s spirit we proposed the following 3 specs:
Teachers create groups
Chats are private for students only
Content is sharable across the platform
As shown above, many students rely on some form of cloud-based resource sharing from their teachers. This reccommendation would aim to make Knowunity the one-stop platform for this type of sharing, while simultaneously increasing their user base simply by adding the credibility of educators.
Feel free to reach out with any questions, and please take a look at the full report here.</description>

When I was growing up, my grandfather used to tell me to “meet people where they are at” in any efforts to connect with them. He grew up in a small village called La Romana in the Dominican Republic with very little. A small general store established by his parents supported his family of six brothers and one sister until he attended medical school in Santo Domingo to become a doctor. After receiving his second degree from a university in Spain, my grandfather made the trip to the U.S. at the age of twenty-five. As he recalls, the only English he knew was “ham sandwich,” which made up most of his diet that first year. Through a heavy accent, he acquired enough English to obtain yet another degree stateside, and eventually established a private practice of his own in Hackensack, where I was born.In reading about human-centered design, I could’t help but think of my grandfather. I’ve carried his story with me throughout my life, and his advice of meeting people where they are has been one of my most steadfast guides and personal philosophies. Many of the methodologies described by HCD involve some version of my grandfather’s advice: actively listening, placing yourself in the shoes of the user, and holding space for the totality of their life experience. It seemed to me, that many of these practices emerge from simply communing with other people, often reading like a corporate approach to anthropology.Some methods seemed more considered than others. Contextual inquiry, for example, suggests a reasonably passive role in research, simply observing the lives of users completing the tasks and encountering the problems that one is designing for. On the other hand, “walk-a-mile immersion” seems tricky. Sure, moving through the routine of a factory worker might help a researcher understand how technology plays a role. Walking that mile gets tricker, though, when the problem at hand involves certain cultural nuances and power dynamics between researcher and subject. Quantifying the parts of a person’s life that are valuable to solve problem lends itself to bias and risks overlooking aspects that the subject might otherwise feel are critical parts of their experience.With this in mind, I appreciated the perspective offered in Listening to Others. “Who we listen to, what we listen to, and how we listen through our research is inescapably political, with real-life implications for the design of technologically mediated shared futures” rings especially true. Political alignment is inevitable and must be considered. Particularly from an American point of view, narratives of colonialism and systems of oppression should be acknowledged when dealing with both international and domestic subjects, respectively. On an individual level, these aspects may emerge in the dynamics between researcher and subject; i.e. an American researcher and a Dominican subject. I’m sure my grandfather would not take kindly to an American scientist deciding which aspects of his life in La Romana were important to acknowledge. Understanding people and their contexts is a field of research on its own for a reason and should not be taken lightly or without proper preparation. Product design aside, we have a responsibility as people to level with each other with grace and compassion!

		<description>How do users access and learn API technology?Method: Eye Tracking, Retrospective Think Aloud

Timeline: 14 Weeks
Category: Research

Abstract
Cooper Hewitt recently launched a new documentation website for their API. We were tasked with uncovering insights about the new platform’s learnability for both novice and advanced users, and identifying appropriate inpoints to the documentation from the museum’s main homepage. Utilizing eye tracking technology and retrospective think aloud methods, we found that while the site was well designed and followed documentation standard practices, prioritizing exemplary content and adding a documentation panel to the code editor would better support and encourage prospective users.
My Role
During the course of this project, I was responsible for taking point in client communication, moderating eye tracking sessions, analyzing test data, developing recommendations and accompanying mockups based on that data, and creating a slide deck report to present our team’s findings.
The Report

A Broad Scope and Two User GroupsAfter our initial meeting with the Cooper Hewitt Museum, we were able to identify three key aspects of their new API documentation for evaluation: its discoverability, readability, and learnability. Another significant factor to consider was that our client wanted to develop this assessment from the perspective of two distinct user groups: novice users and advanced users.

This presented a unique challenge. With a budget that allowed for only six participants, we aimed to find at least three participants for each desired user group.

Designing the StudyPresented with such a broad scope, our first priority was to design a study that was equal parts exploratory and precise.&#38;nbsp;

First we broke down what exactly users needed to learn, and how they would go about learning it. We began by conducting research on how other cultural institutions were presenting their API documentation, and comparing it with Cooper Hewitt. Competitor’s analyzed included: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Rijkssmuseum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We found that Cooper was doing a solid job following the standard practices of other API sites, so we moved on to defining the tasks for our study.&#38;nbsp;
Task 1: Find the API documentation from the home page.
One of the requests from our client was to find an appropriate inpoint from the main site. We could accomplish this by simply asking users to look for the page from the existing information architecture of the homepage.&#38;nbsp;
Task 2: Find an example of how the Cooper Hewitt API has been used in other projects and explore.
As part of the desk research we conducted upfront, we found that examples and visual aids played a big role in helping users understand API documentation. In tasking users to find examples within the documentation, we wanted to gain insight into the potential gaps for users when trying to understand the realized utility of the API.
Task 3: Consult the API documentation and run a query. Now modify it!
The built-in code editor was a primary feature that gave us an opportunity to directly correlate participants’ learning efforts with their information retention. Our hypothesis was that based on their reading of the accompanying documentation, users would be able to run and understand queries in the graphql editor.&#38;nbsp;
Recruiting Participants
Our next challenge was finding pariticpants that matched our target users. To accomplish this, we first needed to define what qualified a novice user and an advanced user.
We drafted a recruitment survey that collected information on the number of years of spent professionally working with APIs, and then asked particiapants to rate their own understanding of API technology on a scale of 1 to 10. Folks who had less than 5 years’ exposure to APIs or rated their understanding from 1 to 5 were grouped as novices, and those who had greater than 5 years’ experience or rated their understanding between 5 and 10 were grouped as advanced users.&#60;img width="1796" height="838" width_o="1796" height_o="838" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4285dc757ea648b640edad5e990c2251699fd61a99a291f41afdca1fdab32187/Screenshot-2024-05-04-at-6.12.16PM.png" data-mid="210275581" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4285dc757ea648b640edad5e990c2251699fd61a99a291f41afdca1fdab32187/Screenshot-2024-05-04-at-6.12.16PM.png" /&#62;
Above image: slide 35 of our findings report
In hindsight, it would have been worthwhile to spend more time recruiting advanced users. The self reported experience left too much room for subjective opinions of ability, and having a clearer benchmark might have given clearer data.
Post Test Questionnaire
To measure success in users’ learning experience, we initially planned on presenting participants with a “knowledge quiz” that would ask questions about the API and how it works. After considering time restraints, and the cognitive load of something like that, we decided we did not have the appropriate resources to facilitate such a test.&#38;nbsp;
In the end, we added the same question from the recruitment form that asked users to report their own API knowledge to the post test questionnaire:
&#60;img width="697" height="394" width_o="697" height_o="394" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0f336779fd8b6d252466f2e2c87eb7ff51f3910be3a46910d8daa162ec7dec33/Screenshot-2024-05-05-at-12.54.48PM.png" data-mid="210307424" border="0" data-scale="88" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/697/i/0f336779fd8b6d252466f2e2c87eb7ff51f3910be3a46910d8daa162ec7dec33/Screenshot-2024-05-05-at-12.54.48PM.png" /&#62;
Above image: slide 13 of our findings report

The comparison of the two answers showed that users had a an averaged 14% increase in their self-percieved knowledge after using the site.

What We Found
Each moderated session consisted of 20 minutes of eye tracking and 20 minutes of follow up interviews. Each session yielded varying results. Due to the exploratory nature of our research goals, we found very few consistent trends as far as quantitative user behavior. We were, however, able to identify common issues that users faced when engaging with the platform.
The bulk of our analyis consisted of pouring over the recordings of our sessions and pulling quotes when users called out specific gaps in their experience or components they would have wanted to help ease their experience.
After compiling the quotes and distilling associated problems into a problem sheet, we went through each problem and assigned a severity rating on a scale of 1 to 4. 1 would identify the least severe, and 4 the most.

Recommendations
Recommendation 1: Include the API Page in the Navigation
&#60;img width="2556" height="1524" width_o="2556" height_o="1524" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/05f488ead4ff647b2543e30b7285dcbb08e97148eb8abe7da449f16225a6cf72/CHAPPI-Presentation.png" data-mid="210308649" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/05f488ead4ff647b2543e30b7285dcbb08e97148eb8abe7da449f16225a6cf72/CHAPPI-Presentation.png" /&#62;First, we suggested that a link directly to the API be nested in the global navigation of the main site. This would increase SEO numbers and also provide novice users with a clearer inpoint to the documentation.

Recommendation 2: Provide Search Its Own Field

&#60;img width="5269" height="1006" width_o="5269" height_o="1006" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e8cccad0524df6afd024919182e0481bb87a81657e2d86db46aefd3bdbd1f6ef/CHAPPI-Presentation-1.png" data-mid="210308680" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e8cccad0524df6afd024919182e0481bb87a81657e2d86db46aefd3bdbd1f6ef/CHAPPI-Presentation-1.png" /&#62;
Recommendation 3: Add Images and Details on Search Results&#60;img width="3813" height="2097" width_o="3813" height_o="2097" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9b9d8110b979e0f1738eeda0b7c8093fec46a5a9867e7a78b96007159408cd13/CHAPPI-Presentation-2.png" data-mid="210308703" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9b9d8110b979e0f1738eeda0b7c8093fec46a5a9867e7a78b96007159408cd13/CHAPPI-Presentation-2.png" /&#62;We also noted that 4 out of 6 users ended up using the search function to navigate to the API. This led us to encourage Cooper Hewitt to standardize visuals and copy for the search results page, as 3 of those 4 users completely skipped over the API page result as it did not have images or a description.

Recommendation 4: Consolidate Projects
&#60;img width="2703" height="3181" width_o="2703" height_o="3181" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/03c97afe468b4076536892cc9da246c30bba183d325f74075a02cae42d6808de/CHAPPI-Presentation-3.png" data-mid="210308892" border="0" data-scale="47" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/03c97afe468b4076536892cc9da246c30bba183d325f74075a02cae42d6808de/CHAPPI-Presentation-3.png" /&#62;
The new API page presented users with 5 separate sections, 3 of which included various kinds of helpful examples: the homepage, “The API”, and “Showcase.” All 6 of our participants found difficulty when looking for examples of how the API could be implemented, and we recommended that Cooper consolidate all of their examples onto one page to make finding them easier.

Recommendation 5: Feature Projects
&#60;img width="1035" height="923" width_o="1035" height_o="923" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e385193d74671ca291debdf65161b8913f9085b2f90f217a80ef099b95a26f3a/Screenshot-2024-05-05-at-1.31.06PM.png" data-mid="210308908" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e385193d74671ca291debdf65161b8913f9085b2f90f217a80ef099b95a26f3a/Screenshot-2024-05-05-at-1.31.06PM.png" /&#62;
Devloping on the previous recommednation, we specified that the new consolidated API page locate and feature the examples as the first section of content at the top of the page.&#38;nbsp;

Recommendation 6: Add a Panel to the Editor
&#60;img width="800" height="450" width_o="800" height_o="450" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e31fc94569dd1c1adb1c5bc356685ed00b134d62be77e7b9f423d87663957cc5/consolidated_task3.gif" data-mid="210310231" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/800/i/e31fc94569dd1c1adb1c5bc356685ed00b134d62be77e7b9f423d87663957cc5/consolidated_task3.gif" /&#62;

During our third task, running a query, all 6 users had trouble understanding how to do so. We observed that all of our participants spent a significant amount of time navigating back and forth between the code editor and the documentation trying to learn the syntax of the API.&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="1390" height="724" width_o="1390" height_o="724" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0d0be52fdb1b41ff3c4578503189d8bce5825347e266553e4885f44d86b72643/Group-5.png" data-mid="210309734" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0d0be52fdb1b41ff3c4578503189d8bce5825347e266553e4885f44d86b72643/Group-5.png" /&#62;To mitigate this, we suggested adding a third panel to the in-browser editor to incorporate helpful documentation right into the environment.

Recommendation 7: Provide a Video Tutorial

&#60;img width="1535" height="892" width_o="1535" height_o="892" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1d61b46d767210f7ec68c2af5188086e77ca285da09d6987862c48e64f5fe83e/Group-8.png" data-mid="210309735" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1d61b46d767210f7ec68c2af5188086e77ca285da09d6987862c48e64f5fe83e/Group-8.png" /&#62;
Our final recommendation was born out of suggestions directly named by our participatns. 3 out of 6 users explicitly named video tutorials as particularly helpful in learnig new technologies during our interviews. Our final suggestion was to incorporate such a video into the documentation to further support users’ learning effort.
Reflections
Upon completing the study, our team was able to pinpoint a few aspects we would do differently in hindsight:
More deliberate participant screening for the two user groups.
As mentioned earlier, digging deeper into potential benchmarks of ability might have given some cleaner deliniations between the user groups.A more solid knowledge test to get more robust quantitative data on the success of the current site.
If we could have spent more time exploring users’ knowledge retention we could have had more opportunities to find patterns in learning gaps.
More expansive methods for testing other than eye-tracking.
While it was a good experience to become familiar with eye-tracking technology, this particular study could have benefitted from a more flexible and natural study setting. Making mockups of our recommendations and iterating on them has greater potential for a more speedy resolution.
Next Steps
Going forward, we’d like to make high-fidelity mockups of our solutions and test their efficacy in supporting users’ learning of the API.&#38;nbsp;

Throughout the duration of the semester, per the request of the professor, I’ve been trying to identify my own ethos as a designer. A long and winding road, I’m still not quite sure I have an answer, but something is slowly emerging from the shadows. Alongside the coursework and the assigned readings, I’ve also been doing my own reading. One book of essays in particular has spoken directly to both my personal and creative sensibilities: How to Write and Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee. Both mystic and distinctly fleshy, his writing and his perspective feel closely knit with my own point of view; I really identify with the reverence he has for the world around him, one that he builds softly yet firmly.This is not a book report, I know, but bear with me.There is one story, wherein Chee moves into his first apartment in Brooklyn after moving from San Francisco. The apartment is small, a studio, but it has a garden in the back – my dream! – in which he begins to plant roses. I didn’t know this before, but roses are extremely resilient. Thick woody canes support the bushes’ structure, while thick waxy leaves wrap the thorny stems, atop which velvety fragrant blooms appear – if you grow them right. Throughout his essay, Chee details the painful process of cultivating a rose garden. From tilling the soil and laying flagstones to boring holes into the canes to destroy weevils, the exercise of maintaining the bushes became a metaphor for Chee’s own self maintenance.Design has felt similar to me in some ways. I’ve seen my own energy flag and rebound throughout the semester which has had a 1:1 effect on my design practice. I’ve been wondering if my design practice should be my rose garden. It’s always been true that I treat my creative pursuits like extensions of myself. I used to view this as a weakness, but as I grow older I’m seeing it as a strength. When I am at my best, so are my designs.One of my favorite photographers, Minor White, said "No matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer It has chosen.” When asked to tackle wellbeing in this class, White’s words echoed in my mind. How can each of us achieve enough stillness to see Spirit standing there? We wanted to address several components of our daily lives that might create barriers for people to find that stillness, while offering helpful tools to that might give perspective on patterns of feeling over time. We were mostly successful, with future&#38;nbsp;directions clear and achievable.Design can mean so many different things. A good friend of mine, a clothing designer, firmly denies any allegations that he is an artist. The line in the sand for him is the place he holds in the greater timeline of his craft. “I’m not telling stories, I’m contributing to a wider stream of history before me that will continue after I am gone.” I see his point, but as I’ve worked in my own design capacity throughout the semester, I feel it impossible to separate our own stories from the work we do. And I hope I never have to; to me, it is crucial to the field as a whole that the tapestry we are collectively weaving contains threads of all origins.In another essay discussing his experience as a mixed race Korean-American, Alexander Chee wrote:“I was by now used to people being surprised by me and my background, and their surprise offended me. I was always having to be what I was looking for in the world, wishing the person I would become already existed — some other I before me. I was forever finding even the tiniest way to identify with someone to escape how empty the world seemed to be of what I was.”As someone with a complicated ethnic background – albeit significantly more privileged; I have benefitted from white privilege my entire life – I related to these words. Discussing my heritage with others, surprise is the primary reaction I receive most of the time. Chee’s notion of searching for oneself in the world in those tiny ways speak clearly to the function of design. As a designer, I want to accomplish the task of representing myself fully so that others might find themselves there.

All this time I’ve been assuming that a designer is essentially a tool in the stakeholder’s hands, but it’s much more nuanced.As a designer, I hope to give folks stillness. I hope to offer something specific that they may find themselves in. The world is burning, so I’d like to be like a river: persistent and flowing. Offering space and experiences that, through the nature of their existence and construction, may contribute some salve for users to keep going; to walk persistently down their own path.Design is a rose garden. It requires constant maintenance, occasional pruning, and more patience than feels possible at times. Flowers may shake in the wind, warm in the sun, weep in the rain, but they stand tall if the roots are deep and the soil is nourished.

	Including Parents in GLSEN’s Mission

	Timeline: 16 weeksTechnologies: Figma, Optimal Workshop

Category: Design, Research

GLSEN is an educational and policy oriented organization whose mission is to empower students and educators in the LGBTQ+ community. Our goal with this redesign was to offer solutions that include parents in that conversation. Through various research methods and design iterations, we propsed new features and helped refine the information architecture of the site as a whole.

	Phase 1: Research

	 ︎ Card Sorting ︎ Tree Testing ︎ User Interviews
︎ Competitive AnalysisFirst, we wanted to get to know our users. Through a combination of card sorting, tree testing, user interviews, and competitive analysis we gathered as much data as possible on who the current users of the site were, and how they were interacting with GLSEN’s website
Key insights led us to identify a few main focus points:
Parent-to-parent social engagement&#38;nbsp;
Vocabulary education&#38;nbsp;
Community involvement

	Phase 2: Design

	︎ Wireframing ︎ Mid-fidelity Prototypes ︎ Iterative testing
After identifying which features we wanted to create, we started with wireframes and brought those frames up to a medium fidelity
prototype.

&#60;img width="1912" height="1666" width_o="1912" height_o="1666" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f5676f31f563bea1340a383f180c5968ac37be234954502fd513e142c360bd4f/Screen-Shot-2023-05-03-at-4.49.44-PM.png" data-mid="177581759" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f5676f31f563bea1340a383f180c5968ac37be234954502fd513e142c360bd4f/Screen-Shot-2023-05-03-at-4.49.44-PM.png" /&#62;

	Feature 1: Parent Forum

	︎ Familiar Interactions
︎ Intuitive Layout ︎ Secure Sign On
One of the primary needs we wanted to address for our users was the drive for social connection with like-minded folks.&#38;nbsp;
In proposing an in-house social networking feature, we enable GLSEN to serve this need directly.
In formulating a design ethos for the feature, I pulled from popular microblogging sites like Tumblr and Reddit, paring them down to the basics to serve folks who might have a smaller breadth of technical know-how.

	Feature 2: Why Pride?

	︎ Text Hierarchy ︎ Streamlined Components
Designing a new informational page, allowed us to focus on our research findings that assessed the existing pages.We made minor design adjustments like rounded corners on all the buttons and modified the search bar, but mostly our goal was to more effictively communicate.

	Moving Forward

	 ︎ High Fidelity Prototypes
 ︎ Conduct Further Research
 ︎ Deepen Parent Forum functionality

Future directions of this redesign will see fully fledged, high-fidelity prototypes with a much deeper breadth of functionality. I would like to conduct broader research and gather more information on parents and their needs and create a GLSEN website that serves an even greater community.&#38;nbsp;
